3 districts — Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Ampara — covering roughly 9,996 km2. Coastline of about 360 km on the Bay of Bengal.
Population
~1.65 million (DCS 2022 est.). Tamil, Muslim and Sinhala communities in roughly comparable shares; mosaic varies sharply between DS divisions.

Predominantly Dry Zone (DL1, DL2, DL5). Bimodal rainfall, peak Maha season Oct–Jan. Recurring drought–flood cycle.
